Ultra-clic westerns---Who scare you more, Indio or Tuco?
Well, for my money, Indio is the baddest of the bad. Here's a ruthless killer with no compunctions. He kills anybody that he wants to and is willing to destroy his entire gang so that he can hog all the loot. Moreover, Indio is psychotic. He smokes pot and has visions. It makes you wonder how anybody was ever able to capture him and put him behind bars. Indio is a of s. Meanwhile, Tuco is a filthy killer but he wins our sympathy because he isn't 100 per cent evil. He doesn't double-cross anybody until they screw him over. In fact, he is the one who gets screwed over by Blondie when the latter decides that the price on Tuco's head isn't getting any higher. Furthermore, Tuco qualifies as the nicest of Sergio Leone's diseased breed of . Remember the touching scene in the Catholic church when Tuco explains to his brother--the same actor who played Groggy in Indio's gang in "For a Few Dollars More"--that a Mexican becomes either a padre or a pistolero? Tuco stole to help his family while his brother ran away to serve the church. Tuco is a sweetheart compared to Indio, while Indio is only moderately more vicious that the role of Ramon that the same actor incarnated in "A Fistful of Dollars." Actually, in a duel between Indio and Angel Eyes from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," I think that Angel Eyes would gun down Indio.
