Why is he suddenly being all lovey dovey??????

Just been on the phone to my ex boyfriend for ages.. hes gone to uni and said on msn that he wants to take me out..I rung him up n asked him n he said he is only rude to me to wind me up and when i am annoying him. He kept saying "I love you" i asked whether he was lonely n he said yeh.. n that he wishes i was there in his bed so he could hug me and kiss me because he enjoys that and that my body would be nice and warm. I asked why he couldnt find another girl n he said no i want you cus u are speciall. The thing is i don't know whether hes lying, is he just in need of some company? he said that if i came to his uni he would take me out for a chinese or something. But why did he came saying he loved me? since we split like 3 years ago now he has been on and off with me. He was going on about cooking chili con carne n how he was good at it and would cook it for me sometime.. I mean hes nearly 21 now and im nearly 18.. do you think he just wants some company?? He dumped me ages ago he says its because i was too young and immature n now he doesnt think im so immature. Hes the sort of guy that doesn't have any luck with other girls (we are both still v irgins) and hes only really dated me before.
